It looks like the new 2012 rule book has a shift in tire/weights once again. The last update we reported on is in January 2011 where the smallest tire class was 2000-2099lbs allowing you to run up to a 215mm and 2100-2399 was several weight classes ranging from 225mm to 245mm. The heavier cars ranging in the 3000 range have the biggest change in tire sizes. Here is the last weight/tire link to compare old sizes to the new ones. It seems like this is going to be a struggle of regulation focus over the next few years with the series before they can find an ideal weight class ruling. What does everyone think of the new changes to this section of the rules?

 

9.1.TIRE SIZE REGULATION
9.1.1. Cars are limited to the size of the rear tire that can be used, 
depending on the weight of the vehicle.
9.1.2. A car must be track-ready and running when it is weighed and
 registered to a weight class. A car will be weighed WITH the driver
9.1.3. Once the car is registered to a weight class, it will be
recorded, and issued a class specific sticker that must be displayed
prominently on the windshield. A car's weight may fluctuate within the
limits of its weight class, but it can never weigh less than the minimum
weight for its registered class.
9.1.4. Tire sizes are AS MEASURED in mm, across the span of the contact
patch. Tires will be measured on the rim, while on the car, while the
 car is on the ground.
9.1.5. Tire size must not exceed the maximum size dictated by
class at any time on track.
9.1.6. Tire size will be measured and verified on track before
the start of every tandem round. A FORMULA DRIFT official may
also check tire size at any time during the event.

2100-2399lbs up to 235mm
2400-2699lbs up to 245mm
2700-2799lbs up to 255mm
2800-2899lbs up to 265mm
2900-2999lbs up to 275mm
3000-3099lbs up to 285mm
3100-3199lbs up to 295mm
3200-3299lbs up to 305mm

Formula Drift announcer Jarod DeAnda went behind the scenes of the commercial shoot and captured all the action from flat black Mercedes SUVS to helicopters with huge cameras on them. Drifting is kicking off again with 5 rounds of the Midwest Drift Union scheduled for the 2012 calendar year. The schedule takes local drivers from Ohio, Wisconsin, and Indiana. The end of the year includes an awards banquet in Indianapolis on October 6th to recap the seasons events.

Round 1 – Kilkare Speedway (Xenia, Ohio) April TBA
Round 2 – USAir (Schwano, Wisconsin) May 27th
Round 3 – Lake County Speedway (Cleveland, Ohio) July 7th
Round 4 – Lucas Oil Speedway Indy (Indianapolis, Indiana) August 11th

The Scion Racing tC that ran with Ken Gushi and Hankook Tires for 2011 might not be retired from the sport after all. The rumormill is abuzz this weekend that Drift Alliance member Tony Angelo will be given the tC to run his 2012 season. Not really sure of the Scion tC will have 100% factory support like it did in 2011 with Ken Gushi but we can imagine some of the vehicle sponsors are coming along with the former Formula Drift judge for 2012. This sounds like a great start to the new season for a driver who hasn’t been behind the wheel in Formula Drift for several years. What do you think about Tony Angelo driving this Scion tC?

We have been covering the Scion FR-S over and over again over the past few months but it really is the best new release of a drift ready chassis. Ken Gushi when he was in Japan made his own personal video of drifting around in the Scion FR-S. You cannot really hear the audio of him talking very well with his personal camera he mounted on the car. Ken does note that he was asked to not beat on the car very hard so he did take it a little easy. Check below for the 5 minute in car view of Ken Gushi drifting the Scion FR-S (with ease) around this track in Japan. Follow the link below to check out the video.

Odi Bakchis who spent the 2011 season going between Nexen and Falken Tire has made an announcement today that he has signed a deal for 2012 with Nexen Tire. Odi Bakchis is running the new N6000 tire for competition next year. He joins the ranks of Kyle Mohan in Fantasy Drift next year while Nexen chases after its first podium finish in tire history for 2012.

Wreck ‘Em – Take It Personal [VIDEO]

It looks like the guys from Wreck ‘Em are dropping another a video coming up here in January 2012. We enjoyed the last DVD these guys released from Australia on our website and after checking out the trailer this one seems like more of a hit than the last one. The best part of this two minute trailer is by far the last rolling seconds as you can look at the fear in the drivers eyes just before the impact moment.

Well the drifting world started a little pre Christmas buzz and now has checked out for the holiday week we bet. Regardless of the holidays Ford is still putting on the Tournament of Ovals which has seen Vaughn Gittin Jr. defeat Tanner Foust along with other Ford superstars. Bloodmasters Teaser [VIDEO]

The team is half street gang and half missile drift crew which is composed of several Drift Alliance Members, a few Drift ALliance Aces, all mixed in with a few new bloods of the sport. The video boasts Ryan Tuerck, Chris Forsberg, and Tony Angelo tearing up Englishtown Raceway in what has to be one of the best drifting videos we have seen in a long time. While the Drift Alliance these days is all but dead (except for Rhys Millen joining the team) this just marks the feeling of 2004 Drift Alliance or dare I say the “Bad As Hell” days. Sit back and enjoy one awesome drifting video.
